Happy Valentine’s Day! To celebrate this day of love, the Guerrilla Curators made a new flash art installation with hearts they made themselves out of clay. The group of talented young ladies try to send the message that art does not last forever people need to apprieciate it, regardless of whoever made it. All around the world, female artists are overlooked despite more than half of gradutes with a Masters degree in Fine Arts are female. A lot of this inequality happens locally, for example, in MOCA LA, 80% of the solo exhibitions from 2007 from 2014 were given to male artist. Even at LACMA, MORE than 80% of their solo exhibitons were given to males in the same course of seven years. Furthermore, if you stop and think about famous artists, you think about Van Gough, Paublo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Claude Monet, Michelangelo and the list goes on. But stop and think about famous female artists, and you’ll come up with Frida Kahlo and no one else. If you google search “famous artists”, the only female result is Kahlo. It should be known that female artists are just as good as male artists. Art is a way to let individuals express themselves and their views and silencing them because of their gender defeats the purpose of creating art altogether. We, as people, need to recognize the equality and humanity of everyone; look beneath the labels and stereotypes and see that we are all one and the same.
